This food forest is managed by Rémi Feraut. He grew up on his father’s farm, at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The family had been involved in biological polyculture for several generations. They also manage a (naturist) campsite. In the summer of 2016, his girlfriend came to the campsite to provide animation. It was love at first sight. After the summer, she went to Dumfries, Scotland for a year to study. He followed her and worked there for 1 year as a barista and bartender. After completing her studies there, they moved to Nijmegen, and Rémie started a bachelor’s degree in Plant Sciences in Wageningen.

In his first year, he was allowed to do a viewing internship. Since he already had experience with regular farming, he was looking for something completely different. That’s how he ended up the food forest of Wouter Van Eck . There he immediately fell in love with the concept. He soon wanted to plant a food forest himself on his father’s land. However, he ran into one problem: cost. This is because it costs 10 to 30 thousand € to create 1 hectare of food forest. Then he received an email from his bank. They had a fund with which they invest in sustainable projects for young people. Rémi immediately submitted a file. He was selected and allowed to present his project. Not much later he got the green light. The bank gave him € 10,000 to create his food forest. The first trees were planted on November 23, 2019, followed by a second part of the construction in the winter of 2020. The food forest itself is surrounded by an oak forest of several hectares and the soil consists of clay soil.
