Agroforestry

What is agroforestry or agroforestry?

Agroforestry is on the rise. A record number of farmers applied for a subsidy in the summer of 2020 to start up an agroforestry system. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries says this. If all applications are approved, 27 farmers will plant a total of 4,718 trees on 75 hectares in the coming months. Research is also on the cards. The Flemish Brabant Agriculture Practice Point planted a trial plot for agroforestry in Herent on Tuesday.

In agroforestry, also called agroforestry, the planting and active management of trees is combined with agriculture or livestock on the same plot. “This offers many advantages,” says the Department. For example, the trees attract natural enemies that provide pest control in the crops and protect the crops against intense sun or wind. In addition, this system also increases biodiversity and the organic matter in the soil.
